Analog.Cafe Podcast s1/e2 “Kodak Removes Remjet.” In this episode, we discuss the recent update to Kodak Vision 3 films, which has taken eight years to develop! - Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/3… - Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podc… - iHeartRadio: iheart.com/podcast/269-ana… - Overcast: overcast.fm/+BQjh0OjBcs As you may know, Kodak supplies a large quantity of film to cinema studios. This footage, known as Vision 3, differs from other Kodak emulsions used in still cameras. The primary distinction until now has been the remjet layer—a black carbon film on the back that must be washed off prior to development to avoid damaging both the chemicals and the film itself. This month, Kodak announced a reformulation of their motion picture films to eliminate the need for remjet, allowing them to be processed like any other color-negative (using either C-41 or ECN-2). In this episode, we explore this technology and its implications for film photography and photography overall. Daren and Dmitri also discuss related topics, such as grain simulations, strategies for standing out in the photography field, and our appreciation for the analog process. Additionally, we talk about our attempts to replicate CineStill 800T at home. “We’re always going to have sick people; why can’t we also have sick film?”—Dmitri, on why Fujifilm should consider re-investing in film, a product that has been deprioritized in favor of more lucrative medical research.
