A Threads/Instagram account is attempting to present AI-generated images as if they were captured on film.

All Comments☝️ SearchDmitri May 16, ‘25 An account on Threads/Instagram is attempting to pass off AI-generated content as photographs taken on film. I believe that the methods and tools used to produce images are significant. This is why we appreciate film photography, admire the skill and timing involved, and reject improperly sourced content. My feelings of deception and disappointment stem from discovering that one of the accounts I follow uses plausible deniability to present their work as if it were shot on film. The pictures being shared by the account have been edited to resemble film photographs, which is commendable in itself. However, unless you zoom in on each photo, scrutinize their portfolio, and come across certain images where the physics seem off (like the one I've attached), you might mistakenly think the poster is being genuine, just as I did. Regrettably, rather than demonstrating their abilities to those who would value them for what they are, @aymenfilmm opted to remove comments requesting them to do so. In response to comments inquiring about their techniques and equipment, they provide seemingly AI-generated replies mentioning film stocks and cameras that cannot produce the types of images they showcase. This creates a negative atmosphere for people like me, who may now find it harder to trust what they see online. While this isn't the worst thing that could happen, it is disheartening to witness such a misleading attitude within a community centered around a physical medium intended to bring us closer to reality. #editorial🔥 Dmitri May 16, ‘25 I wrote about AI and film photography last year, where I explored some potential influences for accounts like this: analog.cafe/r/shot-on-film…. However, creating images that aim for a certain aesthetic is not the same as misleadingly claiming they are film by using suggestive tags and dishonest narratives. Dmitri May 22, ‘25 More AI nonsense. First, an update on the previous posts regarding @aymenfilmm, the account sharing AI-generated images labeled as film. They have turned off comments and quotes on their account. I am unaware of who operates @aymenfilmm, but it makes sense given that many comments are calling them out for posting AI images and tagging them as film. Some of those comments are harsh, although their past behavior indicates they simply don't want to disclose how their images were made. Nonetheless, this community isolation hasn't stopped @aymenfilmm from posting; in fact, they are sharing content more frequently. Meanwhile, I came across another post in my Threads feed where @scanmyphotos used an AI-generated image to advertise their film scanning services. The camera depicted in that image lacks a take-up spool chamber, the film canister features a peculiar font and lacks branding, and the entire scene concept is a rip-off from the film One Hour Photo by Mark Romanek, starring Robin Williams. A closer look at @scanmyphotos reveals even more AI-generated promotions. #editorial🔥

I think the way images are created and the tools employed in the process are important. This is why we honor film photography, appreciate the skill and timing involved, and reject content that is acquired through unethical means. #editorial
