All Comments☝️ SearchDmitri Jan 8, ‘25The Analogue aF-1 is a new, relatively budget-friendly premium point-and-shoot camera anticipated to be released this summer. The project, which has been in development for more than two years, first came to my attention late last year. However, since the launch page (af1.analogueshop.com/) has only provided renders (i.e., not actual product photos) and the Analogue team has acknowledged in a comment on Kosmo Foto’s article that the sample image depicted is not taken with their camera (kosmofoto.com/2025/01/anal…), I wanted to conduct further research before sharing this #editorial🔥.
First, let's look at the specs: the camera, priced at €399/$412 (with a pre-launch discount of €339/$349), will include a six-element 35mm 𝒇2.8 lens with Lidar autofocus, autoexposure (only), motorized film transport, shutter speed up to 1/1000, a flash, and a DX-code reader for ISO25-5000. When I contacted Analogue, they mentioned that the camera might also incorporate exposure compensation (+1.5EV) for backlighting and a flash override. However, they have not yet replied to my request for an interview (I will update this thread if they do).
I did come across a video from Analogue Amsterdam, which featured a brief clip showcasing a physical (dummy model?) of the camera being held by customers: youtube.com/watch?v=SflI-y…
#gas Dmitri Jan 8, ‘25Analogue’s product will be competing against some of the leading camera manufacturers today, including MiNT with their Rollei 35AF (analog.cafe/r/rollei-35af-…) and Pentax 17. MiNT has been producing new cameras for years and has been selling refurbished/modified Polaroid cameras for an even longer time. Pentax is a well-known name in photography; both MiNT and Pentax cameras are considerably more expensive than the anticipated price of the aF-1.
The project has faced some skepticism on Reddit (reddit.com/r/AnalogCommuni…), which is understandable given the recent controversies regarding expensive yet disappointing cameras like Nana (analog.cafe/comments/brpr). Ralph Tilon, co-founder of Analogue, addressed this skepticism on Reddit by outlining his team's background as designers/product developers and made clear that they would be collaborating with a manufacturer “that produced millions of high-quality cameras throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s.” He also mentioned that they are conscious of their self-imposed tight deadline: less than six months to deliver the aF-1.
The Tsushima Cyanotypes is a black-and-blue photobook featuring cyanotypes by KC Ahonen, with only 200 copies available. I enjoyed turning the 76 pages of this uncoated A5-sized book and observing the 30 beautifully printed blue-on-white cyanotype images. However, the most powerful element of this book was the artist’s statement, in which KC shared the origins of his images and their strange link to our contemporary existence within a parallel universe of ones and zeros.
Last week, I discussed the Analogue aF-1 (https://www.analog.cafe/comments/u725). Additionally, there is a new color film that has the potential to be the most affordable option, possibly taking over from Kodak ColorPlus: (https://www.analog.cafe/app/film-price-trends). This was announced last year (https://kosmofoto.com/2024/05/chinas-lucky-film-may-bring-back-colour-film-production-by-the-end-of-2024). Reflx Lab has also confirmed some positive updates: #editorial.
