A highly awaited panoramic Widelux recreation has prompted a surge of fake YouTube videos. SilverBridges, a camera company established by a prominent Hollywood actor and the creators of an analog photography print magazine, has just revealed its new camera: the WideluxX™ Prototype 0001. This device is a meticulous reproduction of the original, esteemed swing-lens panoramic camera, crafted with modern materials and technology in Germany.
The challenge with vintage Widelux cameras lies in their imprecise manufacturing process, which complicates repairs. A factory fire that obliterated all documentation and blueprints for these cameras further hindered repairs, which often require specific documentation. This has posed difficulties for the company trying to recreate this remarkable product.
Fortunately for vintage Widelux owners, SilverBridges intends for their new camera to be fully compatible with the original models, including complete parts interchangeability for easier repairs.
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to meet Charys Schuler, one of SilverBridges' founders, at an event in Vancouver. I documented the experience here: analog.cafe/r/widelux-fake….
Regarding the fake YouTube videos, SilverBridges announced this prototype on their website earlier this week (silvergrainclassics.com/en…). However, the announcement provided little more than a handful of photos of the camera. Most of the reveal is expected to be in a video format, which will be released on the WideluxX website later.
Despite the excitement surrounding this camera—and possibly Jeff Bridges’ name—there seems to be a burgeoning number of fake YouTube videos that claim to showcase Charys and Marwan’s presentation of the camera, but merely feature a static image coupled with an AI-generated voice spouting nonsense. Avoid wasting your time on these.
