Kodak might be eliminating remjet from Vision 3 films!

Kodak might be eliminating the remjet layer from Vision 3 films! In an unofficial announcement shared by Memorylab on Instagram (instagram.com/p/DKQpkdhS6EF), it seems that Kodak could be planning to remove the remjet layer in their upcoming products.

This change would mean that unaltered Kodak Vision 3 films could be processed using standard C-41 development, although the restriction on bulk purchases will still apply (analog.cafe/comments/up67). The functions of the remjet layer, which provides anti-static and anti-halation features, will be replaced by a different technology: the Anti-Halation Undercoat or "AHU."

Brands like Cinema Shorts, which offer repacked Kodak Vision 3 film, caution that those films cannot be developed with standard color chemicals. (I’m offering FREE Cinema Shorts rolls here: analog.cafe/r/free-film-40h).

The remjet backing acts to prevent static discharges and halation. It is the black carbon layer on the back of Vision 3 films that can damage developer chemicals if not properly removed, as explained here: analog.cafe/r/how-to-remov….

Remjet is a key feature of these Kodak films, and its removal also characterizes films like CineStill 800T, which are essentially the same films but have had the remjet eliminated post-production, resulting in a distinct appearance: analog.cafe/r/cinestill-80….
