Updated: “How to Manually Invert Film Negatives.”

I created this guide four years ago after exploring ways to independently handle the process that traditional scanning and film inversion applications often complicate.

I aimed to understand how exactly the software influences the colors of my film, allowing me to differentiate and manage the visual variations between different film stocks and assess the impact of my lenses, filters, and exposures.

Having gained substantial knowledge about the transformation of a negative with an orange mask into a digital color image, I was able to write film reviews that measured and compared subtle differences among film stocks, unlike others who might rely on online myths, marketing content, or erratic scanning practices. I could also extract more image data from my scans and achieve greater editing flexibility.

This weekend, I rewrote the guide entirely and included new illustrations. It no longer concentrates on Photoshop or any specific editing software, and the revised article thoroughly explains the theory with examples.
